According to the Constitution of the Republic of Hungary "The Prosecutor General and the Prosecution Service shall ensure the protection of the rights of the citizens, and shall steadfastly prosecute any act which violates or endangers the constitutional order, and the security and independence of the country." The Prosecution Service is the defender of public interest, and as such participates in the enforcement of individual rights.

At the millennium the Prosecution Service examined its results and weighted up the challenges of the forthcoming years. In order to perform its duties as part of the judicial system on an outstandingly high level also in the future, the Prosecution Service decided for renewal. The reform means the modernization of the organization for making it more flexible and more effective. At the same time modernisation requires a change of approach.

Hungary has been a Member State of the European Union since the 1st of May 2004. Due to the reforms realized already, our organization is able to fulfil its Member State obligations and act as a competent Member State prosecution service.

We are aware of the fact that in addition to international acknowledgement, an institution can only be successful in the long run with the support of the national society. To be supported, the work of prosecutors has to be made recognizable and understandable for everybody. An internet homepage creates a more personal relationship and it eases the rigidity of formal functioning. It is suitable for making the activities of the Prosecution Service, an institution necessary for the proper functioning of the modern state, more tangible.
